Collector's Eye

How to spot quality 2ndhand design - in under 30 seconds.

Always drag the piece toward natural light. Not showroom spots, not smartphone flash. Real daylight reveals cracks, uneven color, or surface warping. If it only looks good in the shadows — it’s hiding something.

Flip it over. Check the frame, not the finish. Are the joints screwed cleanly? Dowels, corner blocks, and old-school carpentry? Good signs. Staples, glue blobs, or lazy welds? Walk away. The underside tells you how it was made — and how long it’ll last.

Sit on it. Shift your weight. Wiggle. If it creaks, rocks, or leans — it’s either loose or poorly built. Good design should hold still, even if it’s been around. Don’t feel weird about testing in public. A quiet seat now is better than a broken one later.

Let your hands speak first. Solid wood has weight and grain. Chrome should feel cold and steady. Ceramic should feel dense, not hollow. Cheap materials lie with surface shine — but good ones feel honest. Touch is faster than Google.

Turn it over. Check for dust rings, stamp marks, or handwritten codes. You’ll often find maker labels, country of origin, or clues to era. The belly holds the history — and sometimes the value.
